Start with Art

Specifically geared toward 3rd-6th graders, Start with Art uses artworks in the Museum's collection, as well as art projects, as inspiration and departure points for creative, educational lessons in language arts, science, and social studies.  This program fulfills Oklahoma PASS objectives during the museum trip and in the classroom with supplementary classroom materials.  It is also a great way to encourage self-motivated learning and to meet the needs of diverse learning styles.

Start with Art: Ancient Egypt uses the MGMoA's collection of Egyptian artwork and artifacts as a point of entry facilitating the integration of art into language arts, science, and especially social studies.  In addition to learning about the Egyptian artworks and artifacts, students visiting the museum will discuss ancient Egyptian civilization and culture, including religious beliefs and mythology.   They will also create their own Egyptian cartouches!  Finally, students will have opportunities for listening, speaking, and group interaction.  Follow-up activities included in the teacher's guide include opportunities for reading, writing, and further critical thinking. Teachers' Guide lists education standards for 6th grade, but is applicable/modifiable for 3rd-6th grades.

I Will be Back Next Year!

My students have very little opportunity to visit a museum like Mabee-Gerrer. The small size made it so personal. My students felt like it was "their" museum and they were so awed and surprised that the msueum field trip could be so fun.

Thank you for a wonderful day!

The museum is a gem!

What a wonderful surprise!

We are very grateful to have the Mabee-Gerrer to provide a hands-on experience as we study ancient history!

Thank you Start with Art Sponsors!

Thank you to all the sponsors that contributed to this excellent program.
