A Year with the Saint John's Bible: Volume 6, The Gospels and Acts
December 14 2014 - January 25 2015
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the presence of St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee, OK, Volume 6 (Gospels and Acts) of the Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition is on display at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art until October 2015.
All seven volumes of this monumental work are featured in the exhibit The Illuminated Word: The Saint John's Bible at the Museum December 14, 2014 - January 25, 2015.
The St. John’s Bible is the first illuminated, handwritten Bible of monumental size to be commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in 500 years. The Bible is arranged in seven volumes of approximately 1,150 pages using the New Revised Standard Version translation. Donald Jackson, Senior Scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office, was the lead artist, calligrapher, and coordinator for creating this Bible.
The Heritage edition of the St. John’s Bible, also created under the direction of Donald Jackson, is created with 100% cotton paper and using state-of-the-art offset lithographic printing. After printing, gold and silver foil is applied using various stamping and embossing techniques. The illustrations are then hand treated, so no two sets are identical. Only 299 of the Heritage editions were created.
